Safety
Safety
In mountains and open country, no amount of preparation reduces the risk to zero. So here is exactly what I do, and what I don't.
Mountains I decline, days I decline
I do not guide rock, chains, snow, or anything needing crampons or an axe. It is beyond my technical range and my equipment.
I make the go/no-go call by 18:00 the day before. On the day itself, I may decide to turn back after we've started. That call is mine to make. You may not like it. It is not negotiable.
If we cancel for weather, natural disaster or transport suspension, you get a full refund or a new date, whichever you prefer.
Insurance
I carry professional liability insurance. I'm happy to share the details if you ask.
For hikes, you must hold accident or travel insurance that covers search-and-rescue costs. This is a condition of participation. If you are visiting from abroad, check that your travel policy actually covers mountain incidents — many standard policies exclude hiking.
On the day
I file a climbing plan with the relevant authority. I take an emergency contact from you in advance so your route can be shared with family if needed.
I carry a first-aid kit, and choose routes that have an escape option partway.
Before we go I'll ask about your health, any conditions and any medication. Please tell me anything that worries you.
What I don't do
I never drive you anywhere. Carrying passengers for reward without a licence is prohibited under Japan's Road Transportation Act. We always meet and part on location.
I never book transport or accommodation for you, because I am not a registered travel agent.
I never hold your money for transport, lodging or meals. You pay each of those directly, where they happen.
